40 Years of Wistow Tennis Club!
Wistow Tennis Club was officially opened to the public 40 years ago this month. Styles may have changed since 1983, but there’s no mistaking a youthful looking Jill stood to the left of the photo, having laid the courts and built Jubilee Hall with her husband Mick.
Selby Town Mayor at the time was invited down to cut the ribbon on June 18th 1983. The original article published in the Selby Times below…
It was everyone for tennis at Wistow on Saturday. Selby Town Mayor John Wetherall and his wife are seen here cutting the tape at the opening of the village’s brand new tennis courts, which have been built at a cost of over £4,000 on the playing fields near the village hall. A large slice of the cost of the two courts has been met from two grants from Selby District Council and the local parish council. A spokesman for Wistow Tennis Club, which launched an appeal to have them built said: “It has taken a lot of hard work, and we’re pleased they’re now open!”
